Physical Faculties

There are certain faculties that we use to interact with the aspect of reality that has been the subject of scientific inquiry. That is: objective reality. I will adopt the term physical for these faculties.

Our senses provide us information regarding the state of our environment. Our apprehension and interpretation of that information is obviously controlled by our mental faculties. Communication is the capacity to create physical phenomena that stimulate the senses. It includes speech, gesture and touch.

Dexterity characterizes the temporal subtlety and combinatorial complexity of our muscular coordination. Strength is a characterization of our capacity to generate crude physical power through our muscles, and support delivery of that power through our skeleton. Obviously, these qualities are manifested to various degrees throughout those systems. For example, our legs can be strong, and our arms yet relatively weak.

Constitution characterizes our capacity to organize energy to sustain our organism. It reflects the efficiency and efficacy of our digestive, pulmonary, cardiovascular, and immune systems. Much of the morphological variety of the human species is a reflection of the conformance of this faculty to natural setting. It is a reflection of the fact that a constitution adapted to one ecology (such as the Arctic tundra) is less than optimal in another ecology (i.e. - the African veldt).

The last physical capacity I will discuss is more difficult to label. This may be because it is not a purely physical faculty, but arises through their integration with our mental faculties. Be that as it may, I will use the term manipulation to indicate the faculty to affect change in the physical environment around us. This faculty is dependent upon a certain conformance between our physical characteristics and our environment. In modern times, we have the benefit of existing largely in realities that were designed and constructed to conform to normal human morphology. Of course, this has spiritual implications. (I leave the reader to ponder whether this assertion has meaning, or is merely a conformance to pattern.)
